The E-ELT (artist's impression)

ESO's European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) is ranked as one of two top-priority large ground-based projects in the ASTRONET Roadmap for European astronomy, which is backed by the entire European scientific community and supported by the European Commission. The current design of the E-ELT in its enclosure is seen here. The E-ELT will be mounted on a central concrete pier that ensures a minimum clearance of 10 m above the ground. It will be shielded from the wind by a dome enclosure. This dome will have an approximate height of 90 m and a footprint of about 90 m diameter.

The design for the E-ELT shown here was published in 2008 and is preliminary.
