Óptica Adaptiva

Embora a óptica ativa garanta que o espelho primário de um telescópio mantenha sempre uma forma perfeita, a turbulência causada pela atmosfera terrestre distorce as imagens obtidas até nos melhores locais de observação à face da Terra, incluindo o Paranal no Chile, local de acolhimento do Very Large Telescope (VLT) do ESO. Esta turbulência faz com que as estrelas cintilem de um modo que encanta os poetas, mas frustra os astrónomos, já que distorce os mais finos detalhes do cosmos. Observar diretamente a partir do espaço evita este efeito nas imagens, no entanto o elevado custo de operar telescópios espaciais comparado com a utilização de telescópios instalados no solo, limita o tamanho e o alcance dos telescópios que podemos colocar em órbita da Terra.

Os astrónomos utilizam um método chamado óptica adaptiva. Sofisticados espelhos deformáveis controlados por computador corrigem em tempo real a distorção causada pela turbulência atmosférica, tornando as imagens obtidas quase tão nítidas como se tivessem sido observadas no espaço. A óptica adaptativa permite ao sistema óptico corrigido observar muito mais detalhes em objetos astronómicos mais ténues do que o que seria possível de outro modo a partir do solo.

A óptica adaptiva requer uma estrela de referência mais ou menos brilhante que esteja muito próximo do objeto astronómico em estudo. Esta estrela de referência é usada para medir o efeito tremido causado pela atmosfera local de modo a que o espelho deformável o possa corrigir. Uma vez que estrelas apropriadas nem sempre se encontram disponíveis no céu noturno, os astrónomos criam estrelas artificiais com o auxílio de um poderoso raio laser apontado à atmosfera superior. Graças a estas estrelas guia laser, quase todo o céu pode ser observado utilizando esta técnica.

Desde 1989 que o Observatório Europeu do Sul Observatory lidera o caminho no desenvolvimento da óptica adaptativa e das tecnologias de estrela guia laser. A Infraestrutura da Estrela Guia Laser do VLT foi a primeira do seu tipo a ser instalada no hemisfério sul. Ao longo dos anos o ESO tem colaborado com vários institutos e indústrias europeias, mantendo-se o líder mundial nesta área. O Observatório do Paranal possui os mais avançados e o maior número de sistemas de óptica adaptativa em operação atualmente.

Com estas infraestruturas de óptica adaptativa, o ESO tem obtido resultados científicos extraordinários, que incluem as primeiras observações diretas de um planeta extrassolar próximo de uma estrela brilhante, assim como resultados chave sobre o buraco negro que se encontra no centro da Via Láctea.

A próxima geração de óptica adaptativa chegará rapidamente tanto ao VLT como ao Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), com o apoio de fundos de investigação da Comissão Europeia. Projetos previstos para o VLT incluem o uso de várias estrelas guia laser em simultâneo, assim como instrumentos avançados de óptica adaptativa, tais como o detector de planetas SPHERE. Estão também a ser desenvolvidos sistemas avançados feitos à medida para dar resposta aos desafios do ELT, o qual terá um espelho primário revolucionário de 39 metros de diâmetro. Obteve-se recentemente progressos significativos que abriram caminho à maneira de conseguir obter um campo de visão corrigido maior, um resultado que terá um impacto direto no design da futura óptica adaptativa do VLT e ELT.
